Behind the Song: Cat Parade Jazz — Whimsical Parade & Vintage Swing

Two jazz parades, one city, zero humans allowed — how the Cat Parade Series traded narrative for pure rhythm.

Hats, paws, and a city that learned to swing

Two parades, one impulse

It started with a single question: what if an entire city existed just to be a stage?

Not a story. Not a hero's journey. Just hats, horns, and a rhythm that moves through the streets like it owns the place. That was the seed for both Whimsical Parade Jazz and Vintage Swing Carnival — two pieces born weeks apart from the same impulse: let the music be the plot.

The Cat Parade Series had already established its world — steampunk warmth, fog, amber light. But The Duke of Amber Lights and Waltz of the Shadows were character-driven. Each had a protagonist, a mood arc, a reason to exist beyond the beat. I wanted to strip all that away. What happens when you remove story and leave only rhythm?

Cat Parade Series

The first parade — Whimsical Parade Jazz

Whimsical Parade Jazz is the quieter sibling. It opens with the city humming — "The city hums, the streets awake, tiny paws begin to shake" — and builds slowly. The cats don't announce themselves. They just appear, marching through painted dreams, and the crowd below can only sigh.

The tone is closer to a bedtime story that got hijacked by a brass section. There's still wonder, still charm, but it moves at a stroll. The parade doesn't need your attention. It's happening whether you watch or not.

Writing the lyrics, I wanted each verse to feel like a scene from a picture book. "Clockwork gears and velvet coats, birds as crowns, and dreams afloat" — that image came from a MidJourney prompt where a cat wore a tiny bird on its top hat. I kept it because it felt like something you'd find in a real parade float, absurd and absolutely committed to being absurd.

「Clockwork gears and velvet coats, birds as crowns, and dreams afloat」——這個畫面來自一張 MidJourney 生成的圖,一隻貓的禮帽上站了一隻小鳥。

The second parade — Vintage Swing Carnival

Five days later, Vintage Swing Carnival arrived — and it showed up loud.

Where the first parade strolled, this one struts. The opening line sets the tone immediately: "Hey there, mister, tip your hat, the cats are coming, fancy that!" — it's an invitation, but also a warning. This parade doesn't wait for you to be ready.

The difference is energy. Same city, same cats, but the horns are brighter, the paws hit harder, and the crowd doesn't just watch — they go wild. "Spin those hats, the crowd goes wild, rhythm's running sleek and styled." This is the version where swing stops being charming and starts being unstoppable.

I wrote Vintage Swing Carnival knowing exactly what I wanted: a song that makes you want to tip an imaginary hat. The lyrics are simpler than Whimsical Parade Jazz on purpose. Swing doesn't need poetry. It needs momentum.

Rhythm as narrative

The real experiment in both pieces was letting music replace story.

In The Duke of Amber Lights, the visuals follow a character through scenes. In Waltz of the Shadows, each verse belongs to a different character with a distinct arc. But in these two parades? Nobody has a name. Nobody has a backstory. The cats march, the city swings, and the song ends when the parade is done.

That was harder than it sounds. Without a character to anchor the visuals, every frame has to justify itself through rhythm alone. A single static shot kills the momentum. The editing has to breathe with the music — brass hits need visual impact, quiet bars need visual space.

MidJourney gave me the characters — dozens of hat-wearing cats in vintage settings, each with enough personality to carry a frame but not enough to demand a storyline. Grok brought them to life, turning still images into rhythm-driven motion. The challenge was choreography without choreography: making it feel like these cats are actually marching together, when really each one was animated separately.

Lyrics |

Whimsical Parade JazzVintage Swing Carnival
The city hums, the streets awake,Hey there, mister, tip your hat,
Tiny paws begin to shake,The cats are coming, fancy that!
Top hats shine, their tails align,Top hats shine and tails in line,
It's a feline grand design. This jazzy world is yours and mine!
Marching proud, with hats so high,Swing that tail, and clap your paws,
Under the painted carnival sky,Every cat deserves applause!
Humans cheer, the cats don't care,Trumpets call, the night's alive,
They rule the world with charm and flair! In this parade, we dance and jive!
Clockwork gears and velvet coats,Velvet coats and shiny shoes,
Birds as crowns, and dreams afloat,Strut along with vintage blues,
No more mice, no time for sleep,Every beat's a playful wink,
This is history they'll keep!Don't stop now — just swing and think!
Step by step, whiskers gleam,Spin those hats, the crowd goes wild,
Marching through a painted dream,Rhythm's running sleek and styled,
Crowds below, the city sighs,Every meow's a trumpet's shout,
A meow that echoes through the skies. This is what the swing's about!
Parade of paws, the hats, the grace,Swing your paws, it's time to play,
The world's their stage, this is their place,The band won't stop till break of day,
Let the bells ring, let the trumpets play,Let the lights and laughter stay —
The cats have come to steal the day!The cats have jazzed the night away!
